[edit]Borrowed from Old Ruthenian фїа́лка (fiálka) (att. early 17th c.) at the turn of 18th c., itself with a gender change from Middle Polish fiałek, a variant of fiołek, from Old Polish fiołek (att. 1447), from Middle High German vîol, from Latin viola.
