Etymology

[edit]

From the усино́вл- stem of усинови́ти (usynovýty) +‎ -ення (-ennja). Compare Russian усыновле́ние (usynovlénije), Belarusian усынаўле́нне (usynaŭljénnje).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ʊseˈnɔu̯ɫenʲːɐ]
  • Audio:(file)

Noun

[edit]

усино́влення (usynóvlennjan inan (genitive усино́влення, nominative plural усино́влення, genitive plural усино́влень)

  1. verbal noun of усинови́ти pf (usynovýty): adoption (the acceptance of a child of other parents as if he or she were one's own child)
    Synonym: адопта́ція f (adoptácija)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The term is derived from син (syn, son), so originally it meant to make someone one's son. It is also used as a generic term for adoption. The term удочері́ння (udočerínnja) refers to adoption of girls specifically.
  • The forms усино́влення (usynóvlennja) (used after consonants or at the beginning of a clause) and всино́влення (vsynóvlennja) (used after vowels) differ in pronunciation but are considered variants of the same word.
