Etymology

[edit]

From у- (u-) +‎ син (syn, son) +‎ -ов- (-ov-) +‎ -и́ти (-ýty). Compare Russian усынови́ть (usynovítʹ), Belarusian усынаві́ць (usynavícʹ).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ʊsenɔˈʋɪte]
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

[edit]

усинови́ти (usynovýtypf (imperfective усиновля́ти or усино́влювати)

  1. (transitive) to adopt (to take voluntarily (a child of other parents) as one's own child)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The term is derived from син (syn, son), so originally it meant to make someone one's son. It is also used as a generic term for adoption of a child. The term удочери́ти pf (udočerýty) refers to adoption of girls specifically.
  • The forms усинови́ти (usynovýty) (used after consonants or at the beginning of a clause) and всинови́ти (vsynovýty) (used after vowels) differ in pronunciation but are considered variants of the same word.
