усинови́ти • (usynovýty) pf (imperfective усиновля́ти or усино́влювати)

(transitive) to adopt (to take voluntarily (a child of other parents) as one's own child)

The term is derived from син (syn, “son”), so originally it meant to make someone one's son. It is also used as a generic term for adoption of a child. The term удочери́ти pf (udočerýty) refers to adoption of girls specifically.
The forms усинови́ти (usynovýty) (used after consonants or at the beginning of a clause) and всинови́ти (vsynovýty) (used after vowels) differ in pronunciation but are considered variants of the same word.
