Etymology

Inherited from Old Ruthenian взаемный (vzajemnyj), from Proto-Slavic *vъzajьmьnъ. Cognate with Russian взаи́мный (vzaímnyj) and Ukrainian взає́мний (vzajémnyj).

Usage notes

  • The forms узае́мны (uzajémny) (used after consonants or at the beginning of a clause) and ўзае́мны (ŭzajémny) (used after vowels) differ in pronunciation but are considered variants of the same word.
