Bashkir

[edit]
Тәҙрә

Etymology

[edit]

From *tereze "window", presumably from Persian دریچه (dariča).

In Bashkir, the -z- became interdental between vowels (following the regular Bashkir development), and metathesis took place: täräzä*täräðätäðerätäðrä. The pleophonic form тәҙерә (täðerä) is also attested in dialects.

Cognate with Tatar тәрәзә (täräzä), Kazakh терезе (tereze), Kyrgyz терезе (tereze), Southern Altai терезе (tereze, jail, prison), Karachay-Balkar терезе (tereze), Kumyk терезе (tereze), Uyghur دېرىزە (dërize), Uzbek deraza (window).
