Russian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Per Vasmer, there are two possible origins:
- A borrowing from Turkic + -о́к (-ók); compare Kazakh суыр (suyr, “marmot”), Kyrgyz суур (suur, “marmot”), Chuvash сӑвӑр (săvăr, “marmot”).
- Onomatopoetic, based on its characteristic whistle. In this case, it would be cognate with Latin sōrex (“shrew”), Ancient Greek ὕραξ (húrax, “shrew”), Sanskrit स्वरति (svárati, “to sound, to ring”), Old Norse svara (“to sound”). Compare also Czech svišť (“marmot”), Slovak svišť (“marmot”), Polish świszcz (“marmot”) , cognate with Russian свиста́ть (svistátʹ, “to whistle”).
