Etymology

Inherited from Old Ruthenian строми́ти (stromíti, to direct (gaze)), from Proto-Slavic *stromiti, with the semantic shift: to directto drive, to propelto stab, to stick, to impale. Most likely related or parallel to стремі́ти (stremíty). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic стрьмлениѥ (strĭmlenije, impulse, aspiration), Old Church Slavonic стрьмь (strĭmĭ, totally, absolutely), Russian устремить (ustremitʹ, to direct (gaze)).
