Cognates include Ukrainian сі́чень (síčenʹ, “January”), Polish styczeń, Serbo-Croatian siječanj, and Macedonian сечко (sečko, “February”). Related to сечь (sečʹ, “to cut, chop, hew”), referring to the cutting and chopping of wood at this time of year.
