Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Uralic *puwɜ- ~ *puγɜ- (“to blow”) (compare Eastern Mari пуаш (puaš), Hungarian fúj, Tundra Nenets пӯць (pūcʹ°)). Ultimately onomatopoeic.

     I molź pizeme i saź pokš ved, i puvaźt varmat, saźt te kudośt langs, i kudoś eź prak, seks meks putoź uľneź käv langs.

     The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
