From Proto-Slavic *(pro-)sterti. Cognate with Serbo-Croatian прострети/prostreti, Russian простере́ть (prosterétʹ), Slovene prostreti. Compare Latin sternō, Sanskrit स्तृणाति (stṛṇāti, to sling).
