Inherited from Old East Slavic порожьнъ (porožĭnŭ), from earlier пороздьнъ (porozdĭnŭ), inherited from Proto-Slavic *porzdьnъ. Doublet of пра́здный (prázdnyj), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
