Etymology
[edit]From Old East Slavic парусъ (parusŭ), of uncertain origin. Either to be connected to Livonian pūŗaz (“sail”), Lithuanian bura (“sail”), Lithuanian bùrė (“sail”), or borrowed from Ancient Greek φᾶρος, φάρος (phâros, pháros, “large cloth, spread”), for which latter compare у́ксус (úksus, “vinegar”) and па́рдус (párdus, “pard”), known Greek borrowings.
