[edit]From Persian اوستا (ustâ) / استاد (ostâd). Doublet of остаз (ostaz).
Note that the first form in Persian may have been reborrowed from a Turkic source.
Cognate with Tatar оста (osta, “master, craftsman”), Kazakh ұста (ūsta, “master; blacksmith”), Kyrgyz уста (usta, “master; blacksmith”), Uzbek usta (“master, professional”), Uyghur ئۇستا (usta, “master, professional”), Turkish usta (“master”).
