From Proto-Permic *ńulni, from Proto-Uralic *ńale-. Cognates include Inari Sami njuálluđ and Hungarian nyal.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian нювны (ńuvny) and Komi-Yazva нюлнө (ńulnå).
