From Proto-Samic *nuorë, borrowed from Proto-Finnic *noori. Unexpected monophtongisation. Genetz recorded the form нуорр,[1] which is the regular outcome.

Compare Skolt Sami nuõrr, Kildin Sami нӯрр (nūrr) and Northern Sami nuorra.
