Inherited from Old Ruthenian набожный (nabožnyj). Cognate with Russian на́божный (nábožnyj).

      With all his stupidity he was immensely pious. In his apartment he had a house altar. He often went to the church of St Ignatius for confession and communion and after the outbreak of the war prayed for the success of the Austrian and German arms.
