Etymology

[edit]

From Old Turkic mantaw (monophthongal: mantū, mantï), from Chinese 饅頭馒头 (mántou, mántóu), from Sanskrit मोद (mōda, modak, gift, joy), from Proto-Indo-European *mewd- (to rejoice) [2]. False etymological interpretations: "barbarian's head" (because of hieroglyph (mán, barbarian) in alternative spelling 蠻頭蛮头 (mántóu)) or relation with Chinese (miàn, dough). At least the Indian modaks [1] are very similar dish (in shape) to the Chinese mántóu and could have entered China with Buddhism.
