Etymology

From Common Turkic *buŋ (grief, sorrow, suffering).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (buŋ, grief, sadness, sorrow), Yakut муҥ (muñ, grief, sorrow; suffering), Turkish bun (grief, sorrow), etc.

The sense "melody, tune" is paralleled in Tatar only. It is unclear if it comes from a separate etymon.
