[edit]From Proto-Mordvinic and perhaps Proto-Finno-Volgaic *mala (“edge, brim (of an opening, gap, cleft)”) + *-sV (inessive case suffix), possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *malā (whence Latvian mala (“edge; cost, surrounding”), Lithuanian malá (“land, landscape; edge”)).[1] May be related to Finnish malo (“edge, side; chink, hole”).
