[edit]From Old East Slavic летѣти (letěti), from Proto-Slavic *letěti. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lēk- (“to hop”). Compare Polish lecieć, Russian лете́ть (letétʹ), Ukrainian леті́ти (letíty).
