Inherited from Old East Slavic лупити (lupiti, to rob), from Proto-Slavic *lupiti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *láupīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *lewp- (to peel, to break off). Compare Albanian labë, German Laub, Latin liber.
