[edit]Borrowed from Polish kwiat, suffixed with -ка (-ka) (compare Ukrainian кві́тка (kvítka)). Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *květъ, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwoyt-o- (“white, light”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱweyt- (“white”), whence English white. Related to Russian цвето́к (cvetók). Doublet of цвет (cvjet).
