[edit]From Proto-Turkic *kiāl- (“to stay behind, remain”). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰴𐰞 (qal-, “to be left (behind)”), Old Uyghur qʾlmʾq (qalmaq, “to remain”), Karakhanid قَلْماقْ (qalmāq, “to remain”), Azerbaijani qalmaq, Turkish kalmak, Turkmen gālmak, Salar gal, Kazakh қалу (qalu), Kyrgyz калуу (kaluu), Kumyk къалмакъ (qalmaq), Karaim kal, Karachay-Balkar къалыргъа (qalırğa), Bashkir ҡалыу (qalıw), Uzbek qolmoq, etc.
