From за- (za-) +‎ меновнїк (menovnjik). Calque of Ukrainian займе́нник (zajménnyk), a calque of Latin prōnōmen, itself a calque of Ancient Greek ἀντωνυμία (antōnumía). Compare also Polish zaimek.
