Etymology

[edit]

Cognate with Old Church Slavonic юсеница (jusenica), Ukrainian гу́сениця (húsenycja), Bulgarian гъсе́ница (gǎsénica), Serbo-Croatian гу̏сеница/gȕsenica/гу̏сјеница/gȕsjenica, Slovene gosẹ̑nica, Czech housenka, Slovak husenica, Old Polish wąsienica, Polish gąsienica, Upper Sorbian husańca, Lower Sorbian guseńca. Probably from Proto-Slavic *ǫsěnica. The initial г (g)- is prothetic or by conflation with Common Slavonic гоущерица (gušterica, lizard) (Russian я́щерица (jáščerica)), and is not related to Russian гусь (gusʹ).
