From Proto-Slavic *gǫsěnica, a variant of *ǫsěnica. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic юсеница (jusenica), Russian гу́сеница (gúsenica), Ukrainian гу́сениця (húsenycja), Serbo-Croatian гу̏сеница/gȕsenica/гу̏сјеница/gȕsjenica, Slovene gosẹ̑nica, Czech housenka, Slovak husenica, Old Polish wąsienica, Polish gąsienica, Upper Sorbian husańca, Lower Sorbian guseńca.
