From Proto-Permic *voni, from Proto-Finno-Permic *wäke-. Cognates include Northern Sami viehkat (to run).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian воны (vony), Komi-Permyak воны (vony) and Komi-Yazva вунө (vunå).
