[edit]From вой (voj, “army”) (dated) + -е- (-e-) + нача́лник (načálnik, “conductor, leader”), a calque of Ancient Greek στρατηγός (stratēgós) (or formed in the same logic as it). Compare the Germanic borrowing херцо́г (hercóg, “duke”) from Proto-Germanic *harjatugô (“army commander”).
