[edit]Either:
- Contracted from an earlier *bodьcь, a diminutive of Proto-Slavic *bodъ (“piercing”);
- Deverbal from бо́цам (bócam, “to poke, to jolt”), factitive from Proto-Slavic *bokъ (“protrusion”) or *bosti (“to pierce”).
