[edit]From Persian مرچ (morč, “pepper”), ultimately from Sanskrit मरिच (marica).
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (murč, “Piper nigrum”);[1] Kazakh бұрыш (būryş), Kyrgyz мурч (murc), Uzbek murch, Turkmen burç (“pepper”).
