[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish برج (burc, “zodiac, constellation, tower”), from Arabic بُرْج (burj), from Classical Syriac ܒܘܪܓܐ (burgāʾ, “tower, columbarium”), from Ancient Greek πύργος (púrgos) or Latin burgus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (“high”) (compare English borough).
