Pannonian Rusyn
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Slovak belavý, from Proto-Slavic *bělavъ. Cognates include Czech bělavý (“whitish”) and Slovak belavý (“whitish”). By surface analysis, били (bili) + -ави (-avi). The semantic shift from expected "whitish" to "blue" may have occurred due to conflation between the two senses of Serbo-Croatian плав/plav (“light blonde; blue”).
