Pannonian Rusyn

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Slovak belavý, from Proto-Slavic *bělavъ. Cognates include Czech bělavý (whitish) and Slovak belavý (whitish). By surface analysis, били (bili) +‎ -ави (-avi). The semantic shift from expected "whitish" to "blue" may have occurred due to conflation between the two senses of Serbo-Croatian плавplav (light blonde; blue).
