From Proto-Turkic *emgek (bother, worry). Compare Turkish emek (labor, work), Tatar имгәк (imgäk, trouble), Bashkir имгәк (imgək, trouble, mutilation) and Yakut эмэх (emeq, rotten).

Related to аман (aman, to be maimed, to be wounded).
