Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Mordvinic *azərə, from Proto-Finno-Permic *asȣrɜ (“lord, ruler”), whence also Udmurt узыр (uzyr) and Komi-Zyrian озыр (ozyr). Ultimately borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hásuras. Compare Sanskrit असुर (asura) and Avestan 𐬀𐬵𐬎𐬭𐬀 (ahura, “lord”).
