From Proto-Permic *ozu̇r, from Proto-Uralic *asora, ultimately borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hásuras (compare Sanskrit असुर (asura) and Avestan 𐬀𐬵𐬎𐬭𐬀 (ahura)). Cognates include Erzya азор (azor).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian озыр (ozyr) and Komi-Permyak озыр (ozyr).
