Inherited from Old East Slavic азъбукꙑ (azŭbuky); borrowed from Old Church Slavonic азъбоукꙑ (azŭbuky), from the names of the first two letters of the Cyrillic alphabet, азъ +‎ боукꙑ, a calque of Ancient Greek ἀλφάβητος (alphábētos). Compare Russian а́збука (ázbuka).
