[edit]- ϸαυρο (šauro)
Etymology
[edit]Likely borrowed from Middle Persian 𐭱𐭲𐭥𐭩 (štʿy /šahr/, “land, city”) rather than inherited.[1] In either case from Proto-Iranian *xšaθram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšatrám (“kingdom, rule”). Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *tk-e-tróm from Proto-Indo-European *tek- (“take by the hand, obtain”).[2] Compare Avestan 𐬑𐬱𐬀𐬚𐬭𐬀 (xšaθra, “rule, power”), Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐏂𐎶 (x-š-ç-m /xšaçam/, “realm, sovereignty”). Cognate of Sanskrit क्षत्र (kṣatra, “dominion, power, government”).
