Etymology

Inherited from Byzantine Greek ψάχνω (psákhnō), from Ancient Greek ψαύω (psaúō, “to touch (lightly)”), based on past tense stem's change ψαυσ- > ψαξ- and further metaplasm similar to the pattern διωξ-, έδιωξα (édioxa, past tense) - διώχνω (dióchno, “chase away”, present tense) - compare ancient διώκω (diṓkō). ψαύω (psaúō) is likely related to ψάω (psáō, “to touch lightly”); see there for more.
