From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰed-. Cognates include Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬜𐬀𐬲 (haδaž, anus), Sanskrit हद् (had), हदति (hadati, to evacuate, discharge excrement), Old Armenian ձետ (jet, tail, penis), Albanian dhjes (to mess up), Northern Kurdish zotik (anus).
