From Byzantine Greek φαγί(ν) (phagí(n)), from Ancient Greek φαγεῖν (phageîn), infinitive of ἔφαγον (éphagon), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰh₂g-, zero-grade of *bʰeh₂g- (to divide, distribute).
