Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Apparently from Proto-Indo-European *kʷeh₁y- (“to perceive”), and compared with Sanskrit चायति (cāyati, “to observe, perceive”) and Proto-Slavic *čajati (“to wait, expect”). However, this is phonetically unsatisfactory, as the Greek term shows no trace of the root-final *-i-.[1]
Pronunciation
[edit]- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /tɛː.rós/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /te̝ˈros/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /tiˈros/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /tiˈros/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /tiˈros/
