[edit]Etymology
[edit]Possibly a neuter substantivization of Συρικός (Surikós, “Syrian”), but more likely altered by folk etymology to resemble it, and actually borrowed from an eastern source such as Arabic زَرْقُون (zarqūn) or its source, Classical Persian زرگون (zargōn)/Middle Persian 𐭦𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭭 (zlgʿn /zargōn/, “red lead”), from Proto-Iranian *jr̥Hanyam (“gold”).
