σπάργανον
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From *σπάργω (*spárgō, “to swaddle”), which is from the zero-grade of Proto-Indo-European *sper- (“to twist”) with a g-extension (perhaps via contamination with a verb of similar meaning, like εἴργω (eírgō, “to enclose”)). Related to σπεῖρον (speîron, “burial shroud”) and σπεῖρα (speîra, “coil”); see the latter for more cognates.[1]
