Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish نفت (neft, spirit of turpentine). Doublet of νάφθα (náftha).

  1. (chemistry) turpentine, volatile essential oil from distillation of terebinth or pine tree resin, used as a solvent and paint thinner.
    Synonyms: τερεβινθέλαιο (terevinthélaio), τερεβινθίνη (terevinthíni), τρεμεντίνα (trementína)
  2. (chemistry) mineral turpentine, white spirit, volatile transparent liquid derived from paraffin, used as a solvent and paint thinner, with similar applications but very different chemical consistency from resin-derived wood turpentine.
    Synonym: ορυκτή τερεβινθίνη (oryktí terevinthíni)
