From Proto-Iranian *mā́Hah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mā́Has, from Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s. Compare Old Persian 𐎶𐎠𐏃 (m-a-h). Cognate of Sanskrit मास् (mās), मास (māsa).
