Inherited from Byzantine Greek μαλώνω (malṓnō) < *ὁμαλώνω (*homalṓnō, smooth down disputes) < *ὁμαλόω (*homalóō), from Ancient Greek ὁμαλός (homalós, smooth).[1][2]

μαλώνω (malóno) (past μάλωσα, passive —, ppp μαλωμένος)

  1. (transitive) to tell off, scold, rebuke, chide, give out (criticise harshly)
    Μάλωσα τον γιο μου επειδή έβαλε ένα πιρούνι στην πρίζα.
    Málosa ton gio mou epeidí évale éna piroúni stin príza.
    I told my son off for putting a fork into the socket.
  2. (intransitive) to argue, quarrel, fight (have a verbal dispute)
    Κάθε φορά που μαλώνουν οι διπλανοί τους ακούει όλη η γειτονιά.
    Káthe forá pou malónoun oi diplanoí tous akoúei óli i geitoniá.
    Every time the people next door argue the whole neighbourhood hears.
  3. (intransitive, by extension) to not be on speaking terms (after an argument)
    Εγώ και ο πατέρας μου είμαστε τώρα δύο χρόνια μαλωμένοι.
    Egó kai o patéras mou eímaste tóra dýo chrónia maloménoi.
    My father and I haven't been on speaking terms for two years now.
