[edit]Borrowed from Italian nostromo with dissimilation of consonants [n]-[m] > [l]-[m], from Catalan nostramo or Spanish nuestramo < nuestro (“our”) amo (“master”),[1] used in 16th century slave galleys as "overseer".[2]
