From Proto-Hellenic *korsā́, a primary verbal noun from Proto-Indo-European *kers- (“to shave”), an s-extension of *(s)ker- (“to cut”), the same root of κείρω (keírō, “to cut, shear, crop”), κόρση (kórsē, “temple (of forehead)”), and κορμός (kormós, “trunk of a tree”). Direct cognates include Hittite [script needed] (karš-ᶻᶦ, “to cut off”), Tocharian A kärs- (“to know, understand”), Tocharian B kärst- (“to cut off, destroy”).
