[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *ḱlewH-. From the same root, we can find κλύδων (klúdōn, “billow”). Other cognates are Latin cluō (“I clean, purge”), Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌿𐍄𐍂𐍃 (hlūtrs, “clean, pure”) and Welsh clir (“clean, pure”).
