[edit]Inherited from Koine Greek καλλιτέχνης (kallitékhnēs), from Ancient Greek κάλλος (kállos, “beauty”) + τέχνη (tékhnē, “craft”) + -ης (-ēs, “nominal suffix”). The modern sense of "artist" is a semantic loan from French artiste.
